The AFG 4.0 AR Recumbent Exercise Bike combines modern industry standards for bikes in its class with cutting edge technology of its own to compete with the ever-growing selection of exercise bikes available on the market. From its recumbent seat design to the state-of-the-art magnetic braking system featured on all AFG bikes, this model packs a diverse and generous feature set that would impress any fitness enthusiast.

In this review, we’ll talk about how the magnetic braking system makes this bike more durable than most, how the side-mounted LCD screen makes it easier to watch TV while you exercise, and how the recumbent seat design makes it one of the most comfortable and ergonomically designed bikes I’ve come across.

I’ll also point out the one thing I hate about it (but we’ll get to that later).afg 4.0 recumbent bike

Comfort Level and Ease of Use

The recumbent seat design has a way of making every exercise bike feel much more comfortable than average and this model is no exception. The strong lumbar support work well with the laid back design – no pun intended – to keep your body comfortable and well supported as you exercise. Physics and modern technology really are wonderful things sometimes.

Like a lot of modern bikes, this model has a space cut out in its frame for what’s called a “step-through” entry. This simply means that instead of mounting the bike by climbing onto it – as with older, less modern models – users simply step through the space provided and sit back onto the seat (and dismount in a similar fashion). This is much easier and especially useful for those of us who aren’t in all that great shape yet (but hey – that’s why you’d be buying an exercise bike in the first place right?).

Selecting resistance levels and programs is a breeze. The LCD interface is quite easy to navigate and is pushed off to one side – removing it from directly in front of you while you work out and making it easier to watch TV or otherwise focus your attention in front of you while riding without having your view obscured.

There are quite a few features that set this bike apart from similar competitors. One of these – the magnetic braking system – is a feature that AFG has perfected and implemented on all their exercise bikes to maximise the ease of braking (especially good when riding at high speed and resistance) while also extending the life of the braking system itself indefinitely (as opposed to the few years that typical exercise bike brakes last). They actually back this up with their warranty too.

Next up is the recumbent seat design that has seen increasing popularity as more manufacturers and users see the benefits it offers. The semi-horizontal seated position it encourages puts far less stress on sensitive areas than traditional bikes and makes workouts much more comfortable and free of aches and pains. This helps users to focus more on the actual workout.Display

Another cool feature of this recumbent bike is the heart monitor. Quite a few exercise bikes monitor your pulse through sensors in the handle bar but this model takes it a step further by using a chest strap attachment (included) to precisely measure your heart rate and help you stay within your target zone. Other bikes I’ve reviewed that feature a monitor like that usually don’t ship with the attachment included so it’s worth noting that you don’t need to make any additional purchases for this feature.

Speaking of staying within your target heart rate zone, the recumbent bike has a bright LCD and LED display to help users do just that. Increasing your workout heart rate to get it into the target zone is as easy as increasing the resistance to one of the twenty levels provided while riding at the same speed. The LCD displays help with keeping track of the current resistance level, current heart rate, and some overall workout statistics you might find useful including calories burned, workout time, energy generated, and more.

Finally, with a up to 10 preset programs, this model offers a diverse set of workouts including intervals, weight loss, rolling, and cadence, this recumbent bike seems to have something for everyone’s fitness level and unique goals.

Assembling this bike is comparatively easy when you compare it to other similar exercise bikes. Many similar bikes will give you a few hours of workout just setting them up so, with less than an hour (on average), this model is among the easiest and quickest. The instructions provided are clear, concise, and easy to follow – especially since everything you’ll need is included with the delivery box (no need to go scrambling to look for anything).

This model is a bit on the heavier side, though, so I’d recommend that you bring the shipping box’s contents to a comfortable location where you expect to do most of your exercising and assemble it there – rather than assembling it as soon as you open it up and then having to worry about moving it later. That won’t be fun to do by yourself since it weighs 150 pounds once you’ve put everything together – especially if there are stairs involved.

Overall, assembling and setting up this particular recumbent bike should be a breeze for anyone.

The only thing I don’t really like about this model is that it doesn’t feature connectivity with your iPod like some higher-end models. This isn’t super-necessary, of course, since you could always just put headphones on and listen to your music while you ride anyway.afg bike side

The AFG 4.0 AR Recumbent Exercise Bike does a great job at combining a nice feature set with great build quality and some subtle improvements (like moving the LCD screen off to one side and out of the way of TV watchers) and is an awesome bike overall – well worth considering for potential users of all types and fitness levels.

All in all, we really liked what this model has to offer for the price we’re paying, although since we’ll be splurging quite a bit for this bike, it is always worth it to also check out other models, thus we recommend compare it to same price-range Livestrong LS6.0R, Sole R92 and Diamondback 510sr.

The AFG 4.0 is available on the Amazon website and comes with a lifetime-warranty on the frame, 3 years on parts and 1 year on labor.
