Compare with other rowing machines

Built from solid and long-lasting materials, the Concept2 Model E Indoor Rowing Machine is a fitness equipment that was originally designed for commercial, heavy-duty use in gyms and army training bases. Now adapted for domestic use, this product has been shown to bring visible and consistent results to its user’s overall physical health. Conceived to ease the body through the natural movements of rowing on actual water, this machine allows users to burn 300 to 500 calories per hour, depending on their overall health, gender and weight.

This equipment is manufactured by Concept2, a well-reputed company among professional trainers and gyms. This company was founded in 1976 and since then, it became a leading figure in the fitness industry. Indeed, the quality of rowers offered by this company led us to review not just this model, but also the cheaper Model D, which is actually the most popular rowing machine at the moment and our top favorite.

Assembly and Parts

Personally, I needed around 30 to 45 minutes to set up the rower. However, a more experienced user who actually assembled this type of machine before might even put the parts together in 15 minutes or less. The boxed packaging comes with all the required accessories and tools, but I did have a problem with a couple of screws that were not too compatible with the assembly holes. This resulted in me having to purchase the proper screws, but, other than this insignificant mishap, the assembly process was relatively easy.

The packaging includes:

  • Plastic fittings
  • Chain Oil
  • Thickly padded seat
  • Nylon Rowing Strap
  • Foot plates with adjustable nylon straps
  • Aluminum Seat Rail
  • PM4 Performance Monitor

The rower also arrived with a detailed and illustrated manual which delivered helpful instructions in several languages. The provided tools are also fairly easy to understand and use, with a whole section dedicated to them in the booklet.

Product Features

Personally, I was really appreciative of the noiseless and exceptionally smooth and fluid glide across the rower’s track. Indeed, from my experience, traditionally-designed machines such as this one tend to be quite squeaky and noisy but users will be pleasantly surprised by the virtually noise-free feature of this particular product.

Boasting of an impressive user capacity of up to 500 pounds, this model has a clear advantage over the similarly-priced BodyCraft VR500. This rower also features a 20-inch frame height which positions the user at an optimal angle for workout. This angle also enhances the gravitational pull, which in return, allows you to benefit the most from your training session. Best of all, the seat’s height is perfect for the elderly and inexperienced athletes because it’s relatively easy to climb on and off. The seat is also thickly padded which basically encourage users to push through their normal zone of resistance and add some extra hours to their workout session without suffering from any of the dreaded aches and burns.

As far as storage go, the rower can very easily be separated into two parts which you can keep away until the next time you need to use it. Another feature which users will certainly enjoy is the PM4 Performance Monitor which will even allow you to play games while you use the rower, something which is bound to enhance your workout.

Ease of use

As far as practicality goes, this rower is surprisingly easy and simple to use. The flywheel design provides anything from mild to challenging resistance which you can adjust to your very own personal fitness level.

Inexperienced users who are unsure of how to keep track of calories can quickly refer to the PM4 Monitor to gauge their progress. This gadget displays practically everything from watts usage to calories burned or even distance, speed, number of rowing strokes and pace.

Alternatively, athletes can either go for a manual workout or use the monitor to select one of the numerous automatic training sessions. As far as the monitor’s game mode goes, it’s fairly easy to transfer any game from your computer through a provided USB key. A Garmin chest strap is also provided to keep track of your cardiovascular function and improvement. Overall, while the rower does look quite complicated at first glance, it’s surprisingly easy to operate, even without consulting the instructions booklet. Users who want to enjoy a manual workout without any resistance can simply settle into their seats, strap their feet and start rowing.

Drawbacks

With a five star rating on most major online review sites, this rower has practically no drawbacks. Only one user reported a slight problem which was more related to the delivery process than with the actual machine. I also had a minor issue with separating the rower into two pieces prior to storage, but that was easily cleared up after reading the instructions manual.

Overall Rating

This product has been very highly rated and recommended by athletes and trainers alike. Among the most efficient gym equipment on the current market, the Concept2 Model E is one of the company’s most coveted items so far, and with a good reason. Indeed, users can expect to see visible results after just a few weeks on the machine. One customer claimed to have lost nearly 35 pounds in the space of a few months, without any other alterations to his diet or overall lifestyle.

This rower is available in three colors and is made from aluminum and steel. Designed to last a lifetime, the machine also boasts of a solid and reliable frame which does not wobble during vigorous workouts. The rower is readily available on the Concept2 website or on Amazon.
