Phoenix 99608 recumbent exercise bikeThe Phoenix 99608 Magnetic Recumbent Exercise Bike is a budget-friendly model that aims to deliver enough functionality for most users at a fraction of the cost of a more sophisticated bike. It delivers several of the features you’d expect including multiple resistance levels and an LCD display with and counters for calories burned and other workout metrics. Despite its extremely low purchase price, the Phoenix 99608 does some things better than many higher-end models – most notably it’s exceptionally quiet even at high speeds and high resistance levels.

Comfort Level

Like all recumbent bikes, the Phoenix 99608 is very comfortable from an ergonomics standpoint as it keeps the user in an effortlessly relaxed position while they exercise. The optimum body position it encourages keeps pressure evenly distributed across a wider surface area (instead of concentrated on pressure points that turn into aches and pains later) and makes for a comfortable ride – even over an extended period of time. This, in turn, encourages longer workouts that burn more calories and build more fitness in a shorter time.

Ease of Usetension knob

This model’s simplistic design that keeps its price tag so low also makes it very easy to use. Since it lacks a lot of the fancy features found on high end models, this bike is perfect for the average Joe who just wants to get on his bike and ride – keeping track of calories burned and workout time at the most. This simple yet useful feature set couple with 8 resistance levels make getting what you want out of the machine very simple and not the complicated ordeal that it can be to figure out some higher-end models.

On a more physical note, mounting and dismounting the bike has been made quite easy as well because of the space provided in the frame for effectively walking onto the bike and sitting back onto the seat (instead of climbing/hopping onto it as is necessary with some other models – especially the ones found in gyms). This can be very convenient for users who aren’t so flexible yet and would rather not start their workout simply trying to get onto their equipment.

  • Product Dimensions: 58 x 24 x 38“
  • Maximum User Weight: 250 pounds
  • Resistance Levels: 8

The recumbent bike punches well above its weight as economically priced model and manages to carry a robust feature set that rivals that of many more expensive bikes. It features a modern recumbent seating design that puts the user in a relaxed and semi-horizontal position and evenly distributes pressure across a wider surface area than traditional seats. This makes for a much more comfortable body position that is suitable for extended workouts and at burning lots of calories and building endurance – while also minimizing the risk of injury or aches and pains from poor posture.

It also has a basic LCD display that shows the number of calories burned, workout time, distance traveled, and current speed – pretty basic but more than enough for the average user and more than I think could be reasonably expected of an exercise bike in this price range. Eight levels of resistance are there to choose from and they provide a fair amount of variation to handle the needs of users across different fitness levels.

Finally, the magnetic resistance design makes for an extremely quiet workout and when I say quiet what I really mean is practically silent. Even at high speeds and resistance levels this model is next to inaudible and somehow manages to suppress the noise generated by other bikes – even more expensive ones – without compromising of workout effectiveness. This, in turn, is great for users who like to engage in other activities while they exercise. Watching TV, listening to music, or just talking to a friend while riding an exercise bike can be difficult when the bike is noisy and distracting (as many of them are) but the Phoenix 99608 uses magnetic resistance technology to completely eliminate this problem.

Assembly and PartsSpring loaded knob

As a low-end exercise bike with a relatively simple design, this recumbent bike isn’t at all complicated and putting it together is very easy. It shouldn’t take most people more than 30 minutes (compare that with the hours it takes to assemble some higher end models) and its lightweight design makes it easy to relocate the bike once you’ve assembled it. This is useful for if you want to use it somewhere else or if you’d like to put it away for a while without taking the whole thing apart – very convenient.

This model’s major drawback is that – despite its ample feature set – it still lacks the wide array of cool features found on some higher end models. Things like built-in speakers, custom workout programs, and other niceties haven’t found their way onto this model but that’s no surprise given the very low price tag. This is a bike for users that just want an affordable way to get fit that still keeps up with modern ergonomic design standards without spending a pretty penny on a whole bunch of advanced features they’ll probably never use. If fancy features are what you’re into, there are lots of other bikes that will provide them for just a bit bigger investment.

The Phoenix 99608 Magnetic Recumbent Exercise Bike does a great job of providing the essential features every average Joe needs to start exercising without all the excess features that drive up the prices on higher end models. Users that want fancy features like built-in cooling fans and music players won’t like this model much but users on a budget that don’t want to waste money on features they have no intention of using anyway will appreciate this bike for what it is – a lower-cost alternative. As a bonus, its simple feature set makes it super-easy to use which is great for users that aren’t inclined towards learning how to use a complicated interface with all sorts of nifty options and menus. It’s simple, cheap, and effective.

All in all, we liked this model well enough, though it’s also worth mentioning that on the same price-range it is possible to find sturdier models with a wider maximum capacity such as the Exerpeutic 900XL and the Mag Cycle, and even some that already include some built-in programs, such as the Weslo Pursuit R 3.2 and the Stamina 4825, thus it would also be worth checking them out before making a decision.

The Phoenix 99608 is available on the Amazon website for a great price, and comes with a one year limited warranty.
